Why is foot care important for diabetic patient?
If you have diabetes, it is important to check your feet regularly whether you have cut or blister that did not heal properly. One complication of diabetes in neuropathy in which the patient may have lower ability to feel pain, heat, or cold. Unawareness of even small injuries such as cuts may lead to serious wound infection later on.
Checklist for foot care in diabetes
- • Inspect your foot even if you feel normal
- • Be alert if you found wounds, redness, swelling, and nail problems
- • Wash with lukewarm water and dry your feet daily and pat your skin to dry with towel but do not rub
- • Put lotion on to prevent cracks but not between toes
- • Wear clean socks, shoes, or slippers to avoid injury and inspect for any pebbles inside the shoes
- • Trim your toenail straight across
- • Put your feet up when sitting and move your body and wiggle your toes to keep blood flowing
- • Avoid activities risked for foot injuries
