Breast cancer surgery

Today, breast cancer surgery has several methods suitable for each individual depending on the stage and conditions of patients. Your physician will recommend the most suitable type of surgery for you to consider. Options include:

• ● Lumpectomy – A breast-conserving surgery by removing tumor and a small margin of healthy tissue surrounding the tumor of about 1-2 centimeters. This method may be suitable for patients with small tumor burden however if the tumor is large then chemotherapy may be offered to reduce tumor size before undergoing this surgical method.
• ● Mastectomy – An operation to remove entire breast. Most would remove all breast tissue including nipple and areola. There are options of skin-sparing and nipple-sparing mastectomy as common operations of breast cancers.
• ● Sentinel node biopsy – Removes few lymph nodes to determine if cancer has spread into lymph nodes. If no cancer is found, it is unlikely to be found in remaining nodes and no removal is further needed.
• ● Axillary lymph node dissection – Removes several lymph nodes and may have options of removing additional nodes under the armpit if cancer is found
• ● Contralateral prophylactic mastectomy – Removes both breasts. A patient may opt to remove a health breast in addition if they have high risks from genetic disposition and family history. Most will not develop cancer in another breast therefore your physician will give personalized recommendations along with risks and benefits of this option.
